Pasitos Adelante: Childhood Obesity Prevention

Folic Acid Awareness 6

This collaborative pilot project between PASOs, the South Carolina Medical Association, Beaufort Jasper Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of South Carolina, meaning “Small Steps Forward”, utilizes a culturally appropriate model to address childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles with Latino immigrant families. Families receive support from a Community Health Worker (CHW) to develop strategies and achieve goals families have set for themselves, using the 5-2-1-0 toolkit.

Why is it important?

  • According to Greenville Health System, in 2012, SC had the second highest rate of childhood obesity nationwide.
  • According to Trust for America’s Health, Latino children are most at risk for childhood obesity of any other group nationally.
  • Latino families in SC trust their pediatricians and trust CHWs who share their language and cultural identity. By working together, we holistically support the families in making changes.

What have been the results?

  • So far, 58 families have successfully achieved positive behavior change goals.
  • 97 new mothers have initiated breastfeeding.
  • Families have established innovative ways to make healthy foods more appealing in order for children to eat nutrient-rich meals.
