Early Childhood Literacy Program

Pediatric Literacy 4

A PASOs Community Health Worker (CHW) trained in the Reach Out and Read curriculum, usually in tandem with their well-child pediatric visits, provides parents with bilingual books, works with parents on how to read with their young children, and helps families obtain a library card. After building a trusting relationship with the family, the CHW can address other social and health needs that may not get addressed due to cultural and language barriers.  These needs could include child oral health, family planning, domestic violence, safe housing, material needs and benefits such as SNAP, WIC and Medicaid.
