What is PASOs for Parents?
The PASOs for Parents program is designed for Latino parents of children under 12 years who want to learn more tools to have healthy, happy and safe children. The main topics of each session are:
- How to show love for my child and be a nurturing parent
- What my children should do at different ages, and how can I help them grow
- How to improve our communication skills and self-esteem
- Feelings, values and family rules
- How to best discipline my child
In addition to the main topics, we will talk about different community resources for you and your children. The classes are fun and participative, and everyone who completes all the workshops receive their choice of gifts for their children, tickets for family entertainment, beauty salon certificates, and a chance to win a dinner for two!
Why did PASOs for Parents start?
The parents who participate in the PASOs Prenatal Programs asked PASOs for support in parenting skills and how to find resources. In October, 2010, the PASOs Program partnered with the South Carolina Children’s Trust to start a parent education program called PASOs for Parents.
How does it work?
PASOs for Parents is offered in Richland and Lexington Counties. It consists of 5 weekly workshops in Spanish, and each session is 3 hours long. Childcare and refreshments are provided during the classes.
As is the case in the Prenatal PASOs educational program, all topics are taught in a way that makes sense for participants, that includes Latino cultural strengths and talks about challenges related to life in a different country.
Where and when are the classes?
We have classes in Richland (Columbia) and Lexington (Cayce) For more information about the place and time of the next session, please contact Mercedes at 803-260-2489.
Other schedules and locations are available upon request for a minimum of 8 participants.

What is the goal of PASOs for Parents?
The immediate goal of PASOs for Parents is to prevent first-time incidences of child neglect and abuse among the children of program participants. The target population is Latino parents that have children under 5 years old.
What curriculum do you use?
The curriculum for the classes is a community-based educational model called Nurturing Parenting, a promising practice and evidence-based program. Crianza Con Cariño, the Spanish adaptation of the curriculum, aims to educate Latino parents about the definitions, concepts and associated risk factors of child neglect and abuse as understood in the United States. Crianza Con Cariño promotes a nurturing parenting style and educates parents on child development so that they can identify children’s needs at different stages as well as age-appropriate behavior.
